Sheltering in Place Projects

Project.jpg

Sheltering in place sooner or later leads to projects.  Today the product de jure was going through and organizing old documents—hopefully discarding as many as possible. One stack turned out to be copies of letters from my late mother-in-law to her sister. My mother-in-law had a keen sense of humor.  One letter included a list of statements that she said were “actually listed on accident forms submitted by policy holders to their insurance company.  Here is the list:

·        Coming home I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have.

·        The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intentions.

·        A truck backed through my windshield into my wife’s face.

·        A pedestrian hit me and went under my car.

·        The guy was all over the road.  I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him.

·        I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed over the embankment.

·        In my attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole.

·        I had been driving for 40 years when I fell asleep at the wheel and had an accident.

·        I was on my way to the doctor with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way causing me to have an accident.

·        My car was legally parked as it backed into the other vehicle.

·        I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray cows.

There was no indication whether or not the insurance company covered the policy holder’s damages.

Working Hard

I always remember W. C. Fields saying, “It was a woman that drove me to drink, and I never got a chance to properly thank her.”  In my case the woman is my latest book.

MTC at typewriter Tribing inproved.jpg

I’m working hard to get this new book in your hands, or on your computer, iPad or iPhone. But the gears are moving slowly.  Here is the amazing thing.  I wrote the guts of this story in six weeks.  That was the quickest part. Editing and polishing has taken almost four months. After that process the finished manuscript, which is in Microsoft Word, has to be professionally formatted for the printed editions and digitally encoded for the various eBook editions.  The Kindle requirements for example are different from Nook requirements or the Apple iBook format.

The pipeline is flowing very slowly right now.  The formatter has said than I am in the production slot for April 8 with a 3 to 5 day turnaround.  The eBook editions follow about a week later. Once the formatting company has done its work, the formatted manuscript goes to Ingram for printing and distribution. I’m just hoping that the presses keep rolling.

Here is a reminder of what you are waiting for:

The Outer Space Treaty prohibits nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons from being placed in or used from Earth’s orbit. What no one could have imagined was that mankind would conceive of the simplest weapon ever deployed – one with extinction power – to launch from space. The military named this weapon “Rods from God.” And yet, it’s not nuclear, biological, or chemical. Two women drone pilots battle in outer space to defend their country. One is a former fighter pilot who, after a crash, now flies from a wheelchair. This dynamic female drone crew from Nashville, Tennessee, now based in Florida, is drafted to defend the United States from a rogue military element threatening to use force to stop the impeachment of the president. Their weapons are twenty-foot tungsten rods. A single rod dropped from orbit would strike Earth at ten times the speed of sound with the impact of a nuclear weapon. As weapons are readied, our heroines find they are Beyond Visual Range.

New Release Date for "Beyond Visual Range"

smaller2.jpg

The release date will be mid-April rather than our original March date. COVID-19 has disrupted everything including my planned release date of the new Mark Rollins adventure, Beyond Visual Range.  That does mean that the opportunity to pre-release order the book at its 50% discount remains open for a couple of more weeks.  To order a sign hardcover edition for the pre-rlease price of $15.00 go to https://www.tomcollinsauthor.com/books/beyond-visual-range-prerelease.

Here is a little teaser for what is coming. The excerpt below is from Chapter 10.  Mark Rollins is talking to Sam, aka Major Samantha Miller, the heroine of the story Beyond Visual Range.

“What would you think if I told you that there are more than three hundred US flag officers within a thirty-five-mile radius of the WH Club? I should add, in quotation marks, ‘retired’ flag officers. I am talking about officers from across all branches—army, air force, Marine, and navy. These are all men and women entitled to wear one or more stars on their uniforms. One neighborhood alone in Williamson County has more than sixty with two or more stars. I checked my own neighborhood. Turns out, we have a navy admiral just three houses away. He was in the Pentagon when it was hit by the plane on 9/11. Suffered some pretty serious injuries, I understand.”

Rollins stopped talking, waiting for me to respond.

When I didn’t, he said, “Doesn’t that seem strange to you?”

“Why?”

“Sam, this isn’t San Diego’s Coronado Bay area. It isn’t Newport, Virginia Beach, or San Antonio. Other than Clarksville and Huntsville, there is no military affiliation or history with the Nashville area. Surely, it isn’t our music or Southern cooking that is attracting these people. We are talking about generals and admirals. Men and women who wore stars on their uniforms and who sent others into battle. They are some of the brightest and bravest people in the world. People who traveled the globe. Plotted strategy for defeating the enemy, and who may have actually had their finger on the damned button!”

“You believe there is something sinister about Middle Tennessee becoming a retirement choice for our military leadership?”

“Retirement, my ass!” said Mark. “People who retire from the military are not doddering old men, or women, for that matter. We’re talking about people who have put in only twenty-five or thirty years. They are in the prime of their lives. They are at their most productive. You think they are going to sit in a rocking chair with a pocketknife and block of wood? Hell, no! They are doing something. Something important. You can count on it. I just don’t know what it is. …That really bothers me.”

I hope that little teaser has whet your appetite for this sixth Mark Rollins adventure. It is only a couple of weeks away. And you still have time to take advantage of the pre-release discount by going to https://www.tomcollinsauthor.com/books/beyond-visual-range-prerelease.

DON'T PANIC!

dont panic.jpg

Don’t Panic, a catchphrase from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, seems to be the perfect title for a book about how to survive Covid-19.

When the Government tells you “DON’T PANIC”, the one thing you know is that IT’S TIME TO PANIC! Not because of Covid-19, but because of what the Government is likely to do.

For alternative view you should read the article https://www.zerohedge.com/health/covid-19-evidence-over-hysteria Authored by Aaron Ginn.

Okay. now I understand the panic over COVID-19

dollar a day.jpg

I keep asking where are the bodies?  Where is the evidence that the Chinese virus is so much worse than the regular seasonal flu that it warrants destroying the economy and upending the life of every person in the United States?

I finally got the message that COVID-19 infections are doubling at a rate of every one to four days.  Then I remembered a comic book story from my youth.  The story asked if you would prefer a million dollars immediately or a dollar today, two dollars tomorrow, four dollars the next day, and so on for thirty days. In other words, your income stream of dollars would double every day for thirty days.  Almost everyone went for the million dollars, but this is what happens to those who took the dollar option.  In thirty days, they became a  billionaire!

This is the COVID-19 concern, or panic! Depending on the doubling rate, It could infect the entire population of the country in less than 30 days. That would  overwhelm our health care system. If we can slow the doubling rate down to four days, we could make it to the summer months where the weather is more likely to send the virus into remission until next season. By then, we are likely to have a vaccine. Given the number of current cases, if we could slow the doubling down to every eight days, about 60,000,000 will still have been infected with COVID-19 within the next four months. If we could lower it to every ten days, that number drops to 8,000,000.

So, we are said to be teetering on the edge of a disaster, and we are paying a terrible price in an effort to avoid it. If we are successful, or even if we have just overreacted, we will have quite a story to tell about the time we shut down the country. If it is doubling concern is real and we fail, there will be a lot fewer of us to tell the story.

What is your new book, "Beyond Visual Range", about?

drone pilot.jpg

Right now, we have an impeachment trial in progress. The country is divided about that, but what if the military was on the side of the President and some of them decided to do something about it. Could that happen in this country.  In Beyond Visual Range one high ranking flag officer says—“In the face of such Congressional treachery, we will no longer keep our weapons holstered.”  As the story of a runaway military revolt unfolds, the story unveils the wounds of war suffered by our drone pilots.  We think of drone pilots as remote warriors fighting our war from the safety of their armchairs thousands of miles away from the front lines.  The truth is many suffer terrible injuries—what some call  moral injuries.

Beyond Visual Range is a Mark Rollins adventure mystery, so as readers of the series would expect, the story has Nashville and Middle Tennessee at its core, but the adventure includes action at 65,000 feet above Cuba, in Hurlburt Field Florida,  at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey,  in Syria, in the rain forest of Brazil,  in Nevada , and 400 kilometers above the surface of the Earth—in outer space.

Beyond Visual Range is targeted for a March 2020 release.  The price of the hard cover edition is $29.00, but the prerelease price for a signed copy is $15.00 with free shipping.  To purchase your signed copy at the prerelease price go to https://www.tomcollinsauthor.com/books/beyond-visual-range-prerelease.

RIP--Max

Max CHIR (2).jpg

Early this morning, January 25, 2020, we lost our beloved grand-dog, Max.  Max was the family pet of Stephen, Robin and their three girls. Max’s home was in Asheville, NC., however, he spent a lot of time with us in Franklin, Tennessee while our son and his family were traveling.

Max even had a Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/max.collins.56. Max was almost human—or at least, he thought he was. He loved people, but unfortunately, he didn’t get along well with other dogs. He did have one good dog friend, Hero. Hero is a black lab—another grand-dog. This one belonging to my daughter and her family.

Beyond Visual Range

Front cover #3.jpg

Book 6, in the Mark Rollins Adventure series is targeted for a March 2020 release. You can take advantage of a prerelease sale price by going to: https://www.tomcollinsauthor.com/books/beyond-visual-range-prerelease .

The advance order sale price for signed copies of the library quality hardcover edition is $15.00 with free shipping verses the release price of $29.00.

In Beyond Visual range The Speaker of the house has scheduled a vote on a resolution to impeach the President of the United States. With exaggerated piety the Speaker decried, “The President has violated his oath of office. Among other crimes, he ignores the sovereignty of other nations, including our allies, using unmanned drones to assassinate their citizens without due process.”

In response to what they view as a legislative coup, a rogue military element threatens to break with 250 years of tradition and use military force to stop the impeachment.

Facing impeachment and an apparent unlawful insurrection among the ranks of the military, the President is  unsure who he can trust. He turns to a Florida-based drone team, wheelchair bound Major Samantha Miller and her crewmate Airman Rebecca Armistead, to counter the military threat.  Both crew members are from the Nashville, Tennessee area and have connections to Mark Rollins and team.

Unusual events and unexplained aerial phenomena, including the downing of Major Miller’s F-35 and the sabotage of her drone missions, focus attention on outer space. The X-37B, a remotely piloted spacecraft,  has returned to Earth after spending a reported two years in space. Its mission is top secret. There is evidence that the military has lost control of the craft when it makes an unauthorized return to the heavens.

The battle moves to outer space.   And in the end, our heroines must deal with an enemy Beyond Visual Range.

Merry Christmas 2019

Front cover #3.jpg

I haven’t posted in a while.  That’s because after over two years of procrastination, the author juices finally started flowing on Mark Rollins Adventure number six, Beyond Visual Range. The draft is finished, the polishing and editing is ongoing. As he did for my  other books, Tom Trebing is designing the cover.  I’ll tell you more about the new book in the days to come.

This has not been a particularly newsworthy year—just one devoted largely to trying to keep our older bodies in repair. The biggest news is about what we didn’t do. We had placed a deposit on an apartment in the new wing of The Heritage in Brentwood—a full service senior living facility; but we canceled and decided to stay put in our current home. The other big item is that I got a new shoulder in August. That’s the price I paid for falling in early May. Take my advice, don’t fall.

Another Good Product!

IMG_0563.jpg

I don’t usually have much to say about products that we purchase. Good ones are far and few between. Too often, they don’t accomplish their intended purpose and are not worth the price.   But I recently came across another exception.

We have aluminum patio furniture that seemed to have seen its better days.  It was just as useful as ever, but it just didn’t look good.  The finish was dull and, in some cases, cloudy.  Replacing it would be expensive, but the truth is the new stuff would not be as well built.  I toyed with the idea of painting it.  But the question of what paint to use and uncertainty about how much we would like or dislike the change in finish made me reluctant. So, I did what I usually do.  I went the Internet and discovered a remarkable product—Aluminum Restoration Solution. You can buy the product on Amazon  by going to https://amzn.to/2HrgT3F.

After treatment, my old patio furniture looks brand new!

patio funiture 3.jpg

The product  description reads as follows:

  • RESTORE, PROTECT, & SHINE: Aluminum restoration solution from AL-NEW removes chalky oxidation on painted aluminum, anodized aluminum, and fiberglass surfaces impacted by exposure to heat and UV. Astounding results are achieved in just a single wipe, instantly restoring color, shine, and luster to previously faded metal surfaces.

  • DEEP CLEANING: Aluminum Restoration Solution cleans and removes chalky oxidation from aluminum and other painted metals in a single pass. Once dried, the product leaves a coating of corrosion protection for the treated surface. Astounding results are achieved in just a single wipe, instantly restoring color, shine, and luster to previously faded aluminum surfaces.

  • EASY TO USE: Just wipe it on with a microfiber cloth and instantly remove years of aluminum oxidation. AL-NEW doesn't require pre-cleaning, stripping, or masking.

It really was easy to use even with my post-surgery arm (ten weeks following shoulder replacement). I did use rubber gloves, and rather than microfiber I just use a soft cotton cloth.  I just lightly wipe the solution on, and the transformation occurred.  No hard rubbing, needed.

How to Create a Socialist State

flag.jpg

How do you change a country’s culture—change it from a capitalist system to a government controlled socialistic society. Here is the playbook, and so far, the socialists appear to be making a lot of progress.

  1. Healthcare — Control healthcare and you control the people

  2. Welfare — Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income).

  3. Education — Take control of what people read and listen to — take control of what children learn in school.

  4. Religion — Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools

  5. Class Warfare — Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

  6. Debt — Increase the debt to an unsustainable level.

  7. Gun Control — Remove the ability for the people to defend themselves from the Government.

  8. Poverty — Increase the poverty level as high as possible. Poor people are easier to control and will keep socialists in power if they are providing everything for them to live.

Many people believe the above eight steps to socialism were the work of Saul Alinsky.  However, that doesn’t appear to be true. The source is anonymous. The nearest thing Alinsky produced was his list of “power tactics” outlined in his 1971 book Rules for Radicals. Regardless of the source, the list, in relation to current events, is rather frightening. Particularly when you consider that in Marxist theory, socialism is merely a transitional social state between the overthrow of capitalism and the realization of communism.

The Two-Dollar Nickel

Coca_Cola_Bottling_Machine_(cropped).JPG

Oops, did I say, “as money cheapens”? The notion that money gets cheaper, is a hard concept to understand.  It was especially hard  for my dad. Dad is not around anymore.  And as he grew older, it was increasingly difficult for him to understand why the price of things had changed .

He felt cheated.  Things just should not cost so much.  We had a lot of conversations about the price of a Coke.  To Dad a Coke cost a nickel. You put a nickel in the big red machine and a nice cold bottle of Coke came out.  Whereas if Dad wanted 8.5-ounce Coke in his final years he would have had to fork over about $2.00. He just couldn’t understand.  And he sure as hell wasn’t going to give someone or some machine two dollars for a nickel Coca Cola!

I would say “Dad, look at this bottle of Coke.  Has it changed in any way?”

“Looks the same to me”  He would say.

“Then what has changed, Dad?”

“Not a darn thing except the price. People are fools to pay that!”

I would hold up two one-dollar bills.  “Dad this is what has changed.  Dollars are cheaper than they used to be.  It takes more of them to buy things because they are cheaper.”

“Dollars don’t get cheaper! People don’t buy money.”

“Yes, they do Dad.  People buy dollars all the time. People from other countries will buy dollars when they come over for a visit using the money from their own country.  You can also buy dollars with goods and services. When dollars become cheaper, people who make things or provide a service want more of them for the thing they are offering in exchange.”

There are factors that make things more expensive.  If the availability is limited, competition for the limited supply can drive up price, land for example. Regulations can make the cost of building a product or delivering a service more costly. Changes in a product’s composition or in the scope of a service can also increase the cost and thus the price.

But don’t let the politicians fool you.  When they talk about inflation what they really mean is that they are making cheaper dollars. The thing about dollars is that once we got off the gold and silver standard, there was no longer any limit on the number of dollars available.  Our government can print all the dollars it chooses to print. With low Interest rates where they are, you could say money has become almost free. In effect, people will rent you money for a very small fee. [The exception being credit card debt where the lender charges for high bad debt risk] The more dollars there are in circulation the less precious they are, and the less people are willing to pay to get them. Today if you have extra dollars some banks may even start to charge you to store them for you. And if you are shopping with dollars, it takes more of them to buy things.

“That’s why you have to fork over $2.00 for your nickel Coca Cola, Dad. Those two dollars  are only worth a nickel!”

Money and Value

Moores Law.jpg

The concept of money and value has been turned on its head, if not destroyed.  Money now costs nothing and banks around the world are even charging customers to store it rather than paying interest.  In our country earning from “interest” is so low as to be avoided as an investment alternative. Rather it is a preservation or convenience strategy. Thus, money seeks value rather than interest—things that have intrinsic worth, and as money cheapens, the value alternative will rise in comparison. Since it is hard work to invest in land, buildings, commodities, etc.,  the equities market “businesses” are the “value” opportunities that most of us pursue.  This is true for individuals, retirement planners, venture capitalists, and even other businesses. Sense money is virtually free, the competition for equities is rabid and the Stock Market is breaking record after record.  The problem, of course, is “musical chairs”— everything is going along great until the music stops and some are left without a chair.

You are safe and will be one of the lucky ones with a chair if you have invested in enterprises with long term value.  But how do you know?  How do you know which companies will succeed for the long haul?

What is important? Is it the dollar value of hard assets owned by an enterprise?  It is the Present Value of the organization’s future income stream? Is it the appraised, or replacement value, of the company’s intellectual property? In my book The Language of Excellence, I explained how Moore’s Law influences value today.  How future value is no longer related to any of the traditional determinants.

Here is the Chapter on Moore’s Law:

Moore’s Law

Moore’s Law is an uncontrollable rate of decay in the value of existing things.

The conventional concept of Moore’s Law is that the power of technology doubles about every two years, but there is a worm in the apple, so to speak. Existing technology is like the apple in the graphic. Moore’s Law is like the worm inside eating away at its flesh. Moore’s Law means that for existing technology there is an uncontrollable rate of decay in economic value.

Technology is so embedded in products and services today that the reach of Moore’s Law extends deep into our economic system, shortening the life cycle of any given product or service. The consequence is that the long-term economic value of any given thing—product, process, or service—is near zero. The enduring value of a thing is in its ongoing capacity to evolve—moving from one life cycle to another. Without that capacity to continually improve and replace, it will have a short life and quickly wind up in the graveyard of outdated ideas, products, and companies.

In the mid-’60s, when I began my career as a CPA, having intangible assets on a balance sheet was not a good thing. Bankers deducted goodwill and other intangibles to arrive at “net tangible book value.” The financial world was all about hard assets and discounted cash flow. Your business was worth its hard assets and some multiple of its profit stream. Today some of our most highly valued public companies have no hard assets to speak of, and some have yet to earn a profit. Perceived value is increasingly concentrated in a company’s intellectual property. There is real danger, however, concerning the preservation of that economic value.

We understand the productive life of a brick-and-mortar building. But what is the life of highly valuable intellectual property? Investors who approach the value of intellectual property on the same level as traditional hard assets with predictable lives are in for a rude awakening due, in large part, to the destructive aspect of Moore’s Law—that worm eating away at existing values. It is not the current state of a company’s intellectual property, but the company’s capacity to maintain, evolve, and innovate that determines the real long-term value of a business.

Moore’s Law is based on an observation made in 1965 by Gordon Moore, cofounder of Intel. He observed that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since the integrated circuit was invented. Moore predicted that this trend would continue for the foreseeable future. In subsequent years, the pace slowed down a bit, but data density still doubles approximately every eighteen months. As price falls and capacity increases in the future, the value of previously existing technology declines.

I have admittedly stretched the application of Moore’s Law to convey its more general influence now that technology has become a direct, or indirect, component of most goods and services. Moore’s Law focuses on the engineering and manufacturing of integrated circuits, but it follows that as integrated circuits go, so goes the products, processes, and methods that depend on them.

The view of Moore’s Law as an uncontrollable rate of decay in the value of existing things is an important concept. It explains why the economic value of an enterprise, or its loyalty bond with its customers, is increasingly related to its capacity to innovate and evolve. Value rests in the capacity to stay current and competitive, rather than in the tangibility or current state of existing products or services.

Given the uncontrollable rate of decay due to Moore’s Law, long-term economic value rests entirely on the ability to evolve.

Shoulder Replacement Update

painhigh-res.png

Everything was going along great until five weeks and one day post-surgery. Then arm pain at level 7-8 returned. It started with the right elbow. Any downward pressure sent an electrical shock through the arm and while the elbow seemed to be the center of activity, the pain radiated  from the back of my shoulder to my fingertips.

First on the job was the team at Results Physiotherapy. They felt that the problem was muscular. Muscles new to the job of raising the arm were in revolt. While massage to loosen knotted muscles did seem to provide immediate relief, it was not lasting. A few days later, I had my six-week follow-up appointment with the surgeon who performed the reverse shoulder replacement.  New x-rays did not show a stress fracture of the acromial or scapular spine, possible complications. Considering the x-ray results, the doctor indicated that a pinched nerve was the likely culprit which he decided to treat with steroids and a three-week vacation from physical therapy.

Hopefully, the steroids will work. We will see what happens in the week ahead.

My New Shoulder

sling.jpg

I am now in my third post-surgery week following complete reverse shoulder replacement.  Everyday is a little better. Yesterday, I put on my own socks without help.  That may sound like a small accomplishment, but it is a big step toward self-reliance. And, this morning took a shower without using a shower chair. In three more weeks, I can ditch the sling. Unfortunately, sling or no sling, doctors say full recovery is a six to twelve-month process.  While I am already involved in physical therapy, I can’t begin to teach my deltoid muscles to raise my arm until the six-week mark. The deltoid muscles have to take over for the tendons and muscles of the rotator cuff which were destroyed in my early May fall.

People told me that recovery would be painful. However, it is nothing compared to the pain I was in prior to the surgery. On the other hand, sleeping is difficult mainly because of sling, which must be worn while sleeping (or trying to). And the sling makes keying and use of a mouse difficult.

Getting a New Shoulder

Shoulder Replacement.jpg

My social media presence has been close to nothing for several weeks.  Since my fall on May 10th of this year (good ole 2019), I’ve been unusually busy with doctors and physical therapists.  And to be blunt, it hurts like hell to push a mouse or depress keyboard keys. And, my absence from the scene will continue for a while longer.

On August 8th, surgeons are going to give me a new shoulder—the old one having been destroyed in the fall. You can read more about my dive to the pavement by going to my post:
It Happens in a Flash.

I tore all the tendons in the group of muscles commonly known as the rotator cuff except for the smallest one, the teres minor. The rotator cuff is actually a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder in order to keep the humerus (the ball of the humerus) centered while performing shoulder-related tasks such as lifting the arm.  With the rotator cuff gone, the instability causes severe pain and loss of function.

My operation is called a “reverse shoulder replacement.” Because there are no rotator cuff muscles and tendons to keep the head of the humerus in its cup, surgeons change the anatomy of the shoulder reversing the locations of the ball and cup and the deltoid muscles become the main functioning muscle group for the shoulder.

I understand recovery is painful and that it takes three to six months to gain something close to normal range of motion and functionality. However, it is hard to imagine that it is more painful than my current status. Driving is out for six weeks, and I don’t think I’ll be doing much posting.  Wish me luck.

Remembered Saying of My Dad #4

Dads notbook.jpg

Section 2 of Marion’s Notebook Entries: Remembered sayings and lessons are transcribed from the handwritten log of Marion Thomas Collins, Sr., my Dad.  He recorded these instructions for living a good life over a fifty-year period.

Wok, Opportunities, Success, Leadership and Wealth
Chapter 2 - Section 2
Marion’s Notebook Entries

  • You will learn as much from failure as you can from success.

  • Credit cards can be a friend or your worst enemy. Pay no interest,

  • if possible. Try to use them only if you can pay when due.

  • Winners do what losers don’t want to do—work.

  • If you want the best things in life, remember the words—try, do, I will and persistence.

  • Each person has been given time to spend. All we have to do is use it well.

  • You can get by on charm for about 15 minutes. After that, you better know something.

  • When the deadline comes, it will be too late. So do it now.

  • Motivation is what gets you started; habit is what keeps you going.

  • There will come a time when you believe everything is finished—that will be the beginning.

  • Opportunities are often things you haven’t noticed the first time around.

  • The reward for work done well is the opportunity to do more.

  • Success without honor is an unseasoned dish. It will satisfy your hunger, but it just will not
    taste good.

  • Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime and too sleepy to worry at night.

  • Persistence is the key to success.

  • Be the task great or small; do it well or not at all.

  • As long as you do your best every job can be a learning experience.

  • The most important lesson from winning is that you can.

  • If a desire to succeed is so intense, no force on earth can stop it.

  • Privilege has responsibility—make sure you use it well.

  • The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.

  • Achievement is largely the product of steadily raising your level of expectations.

  • When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses only results.

  • Wise are those who learn that the bottom line doesn’t always have to be their top priority.

  • Determine that the thing can and shall be done, and then you will find the way to accomplish it.

  • Great success is built by turning negatives into positives.

  • There are two kinds of people—the ones that need to be told and the ones that figure it out for themselves.

  • A leader knows what is best to do—a manager merely knows how best to do it.

  • If the window of opportunity appears, don’t pull down the shade.

  • Find a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

  • It is easy to sit up and take notice in life. What is difficult is getting up and taking action.

  • To love what you do and feel that it matters—how could anything be more worthwhile?

  • If you can’t excel with talent, do it with more effort.

  • Opportunities are often things not noticed the first time you looked.

  • Not a single rich person is getting rich by exploiting his or her working labor force.

  • A leader’s role is to raise people’s aspirations for what they can

become and to release their energy so they will try to get there.

  • The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win.

  • All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.

  • Opportunities are like the sunrise; if you wait too long, you will miss them.

  • Saving is like planting a garden. If you do not plant the seed, you will not get any food.

  • If you enjoy your work and your life, you are rich. If you are not happy with either, how can money help?

  • A window of opportunity won’t open itself. It takes a little help from you.

  • No matter how much money you make, you will always be poor if you spend more than you make. It is not what you earn, it is what you save.

  • Love what you do and feel that it matters.

  • Success is getting what you want; happiness is liking what you get.

  • A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.

  • Being defeated is often a temporary condition; giving up is what makes it permanent.

Remembered Saying of My Dad #3

Section 1 of Marion’s Notebook Entries: Remembered sayings and lessons are transcribed from the handwritten log of Marion Thomas Collins, Sr., my Dad.  He recorded these instructions for living a good life over a fifty-year period.

Wit and Wisdom: Part 3 of 3 Parts

bookcover.jpg
  • It is always helpful to learn from your mistakes because then your mistakes seem worthwhile.

  • Plans are only good intentions unless they are carried out.

  • Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.

  • Never tell people how to do things.  Tell them what to do and they will probably use their ingenuity to accomplish it.

  • The trail is the thing, travel it too fast and you miss all you are traveling for.

  • There are three things that if a man does not know, he can not live long in this world!  What is too much for him; what is too little for him; and what is just right for him.

  • Knowledge is not simply another commodity.  It is never used up.  It increases by diffusion and grows by dispersion.

  • An optimist is foolish enough to believe the best is yet to come and it usually is!

  • Be one who keeps his work, his temper and his friends.

  • Be careful in giving advice.  Wise men don’t need it and fools won’t heed it.

  • The pessimist is a good teacher.  Watch what he says and does, then you will know what you should never say or do.

  • There is too much said for the sake of argument and too little said for the sake of the argument.

  • Everyone makes mistakes, but the bad ones are the ones you do not learn from.

  • Giving, loving, caring making life better for others are some of the treasures of life.

  • When you are right, no one remembers.  When you are wrong, no one forgets.

  • There is no such thing as the perfect man or woman, but you can be the best you can.

  • Time passes too fast except during an embarrassing moment.

  • One of life’s early lessons is sadly all to true; success occurs in private and failure in full view.

  • A clear conscience is what hurts when all your parts feel good.

  • Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of checks.

  • A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

  • The longer you carry a problem, the heavier it gets.

  • Decisions are too important to leave to chance.

  • No one can get anyone out of a ditch by throwing dirt on them.

  • Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.

  • The bigger a person’s head gets, the easier it is to fill his or her shoes.

  • Wisdom is knowing what to do next; virtue is doing it.

  • If you find yourself in a hole, do not dig it any deeper.

  • The moment of victory is much too short to live for that and nothing else.

  • That man is richest whose pleasures are cheapest.
